The Opera and Ballet Season and the Symphonic Season 2019-2020 of the Teatro La Fenice Foundation were presented on Tuesday 2 July 2019 by the superintendent and artistic director Fortunato Ortombina, in the presence of the general director Andrea Erri, of the artistic director of the dance activities Franco Bolletta, of the general director of the Foundation of Venice Giovanni Dell’Olivo and of the manager CTPS Regional Directorate Veneto Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto Adige Intesa Sanpaolo Monica Cristanelli: the Group, from 1 January 2019 became a supporting member of the Venetian Theater, in fact renewed its precious support for the Opera and Symphonic Seasons of the Teatro La Fenice.

Don Carlo will inaugurate the Opera and Ballet Season 2019-2020: drawing an artistic line of continuity with the previous inaugurations, Myung-Whun Chung will continue with the project to re-read the Verdi catalog. The show, directed by Robert Carsen, will see three performers debut: Piero Pretti, Alex Esposito and Julian Kim. Pinocchio will follow by the composer from Vicenza Pierangelo Valtinoni, among the most performed living authors in the world, and the twentieth-century diptych A Hand of Bridge by Barber and The castle of Prince Bluebeard by Bartók. Together with the filming of the Traviata and of the Trovatore, an installation by Rigoletto for Damiano Michieletto will be performed in Italian premiere, to complete Verdi’s so-called ’popular trilogy’. The Vivaldian trend continues with Farnace, always with the presence of Diego Fasolis.

From the French repertoire, a new version of Gounod’s Faust directed by Frédéric Chaslin will be proposed, as well as the resumption of Bizet’s Carmen directed by Wyung-Whun Chung, with Varduhi Abrahamyan and Francesco Meli. Two titles long absent from the phoenix scene will be back on stage: Rinaldo by Händel in the historic staging by Pier Luigi Pizzi, reconstructed to pay homage to the master - who with this production, in 1985, stimulated the start of an important rediscovery phase of baroque music; and Roberto Devereux by Donizetti directed by Alfonso Antoniozzi. The diptych composed by Prima la musica and then the words of Salieri and Der Schauspieldirektor by Mozart will be an absolute novelty for the Venetian scenes, as part of the by now well-established collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts.

The servant of Pergolesi and the first performance in modern times of Engelberta di Albinoni are the titles foreseen for the Opera Giovani project. While for Balletto, Alessandra Ferri and Hamburg Ballett will be the performers of Duse’s first Italian performance, a choreographic fantasy by John Neumeier. The programming is completed by the great ’classics’ of the repertoire that will be repeated in the historic Fenice productions: Donizetti’s elixir of love - with Celso Albelo in the role of Nemorino -, The Barber of Seville and Rossini’s Wedding Bill, Aida by Verdi with Piero Pretti making his debut as Radamès.

The music of Ludwig van Beethoven, in the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his birth, will be one of the main themes of the 2019-2020 Symphony Season. With the performance of almost all of his Symphonies, the Choral Fantasia, the Coriolan Overture, The Creatures of Prometheus and two Concerts for piano and orchestra, the program of concerts at the Fenice and Malibran will ensure a complete view of the work of the master of Bonn. On the podium of the Fenice next to regularly invited directors, some important debuts stand out, such as that of Alpesh Chauhan, who will inaugurate the poster, followed by the first appearances in Fenice by Claus Peter Flor, who will propose the Italian Symphonies and Reform by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy ; Daniel Cohen, who will be the Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh; Hartmut Haenchen - he will measure himself against the Ninth -; Rudolf Buchbinder, engaged in the double role of conductor and soloist at the piano; finally Ton Koopman, who will draw a common thread between Beethoven and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach: another cardinal point of the new Season, in the two hundred and seventy-first anniversary of his death. Prestigious debuts but also expected returns.

That of Myung-Whun Chung, in the first place, which is part of a multi-year project to re-read Gustav Mahler’s work: after the Fifth heard in 2017 and Second in 2019, the master will now direct the Ninth and Third Symphony. And those by Federico Maria Sardelli, also engaged in a lunge on the work of Beethoven, and Marco Angius who will work alongside the Pastorale, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony Jupiter and Richard Strauss’s Intermezzo for Mozart’s Idomeneo. Do not miss the traditional appointment with the Christmas Concert in the Basilica of San Marco, entrusted to the Choir of the Marciana Chapel led by Marco Gemmani; while the Choir of the Teatro La Fenice directed by Claudio Marino Moretti will perform Alfred Schnittke’s Requiem and the motet «Jesu, meine Freude» by Bach. The Staatskapelle Dresden - host of this season - will propose instead the Eighth Symphony of Antonín Dvořák and the Fourth of Johannes Brahms, under the direction of Myung-Whun Chung.

And again Chung will conduct the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro La Fenice in the seventeenth edition of the New Year’s Concert at the Teatro La Fenice. Finally, the «New Music at the Fenice» project was renewed thanks to the support of the Amici della Fenice Foundation: also in this season there will be three performances by young composers. In total, the Opera and Ballet Season 2019-2020 has over one hundred and fifty performances, from November 24, 2019 to October 20, 2020, with twelve new productions and eight shots. The numbers of the symphonic billboard are increasing, recording thirteen concerts and eleven performances, from 12 October 2019 to 15 June 2020.
