Turandot is an opera in 3 acts and 5 paintings, on a libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni, left unfinished by Giacomo Puccini and later completed by Franco Alfano. The first performance took place during the opera season of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on April 25, 1926, with Rosa Raisa, Francesco Dominici, Miguel Fleta, Maria Zamboni, Giacomo Rimini, Giuseppe Nessi and Aristide Baracchi under the direction of Arturo Toscanini, who stopped the representation in the middle of the third act, two lines after the verse "Sleep, oblia, Liù, poetry!" (on the death of Liù), or after the last page completed by the author, addressing the public, according to some testimonies, with these words: "Here ends the representation because at this point the Master is dead."

The following nights, the opera was staged with the revised final of Alfano, but was directed by Ettore Panizza. Arturo Toscanini never again directed the work. The incompleteness of the work is the subject of discussion among scholars. There are those who maintain that Turandot was left unfinished not because of the inexorable progress of the evil that afflicted the author, but because of the inability, or rather the intimate impossibility on the part of the Master to interpret that triumph of conclusive love, which also he had initially ignited him with enthusiasm and pushed towards this subject.

Cecilia Ligori, director, referring to the performance and staging in the Venetian theater: "Turandot’s narrative began with the idea of honoring what was written on the first page of the booklet which says "Beijing at the time of fairy tales", in which this fairy tale becomes the path of the characters to reach the maturation of the self". "The scene then opens up like a Chinese box where secrets, mysteries, perfumes, magic in past centuries were gathered, visions like the moon, like the suspended walkway from which Turandot arrives, from which petals fall that enchant the whole people who are prostate at the feet of the princess, visions that follow each other up to the sum total hallucination of a people that is no longer able to sleep and therefore in the corners and folds of the night reveals its fear to a starry sky, this last constituted as a sea of suspended light bulbs".

The subject of the work, inspired by the name of the heroine of a Persian novel, was taken from the homonymous theatrical tale (1762) by Carlo Gozzi, already the subject of important musical adaptations: from the stage music composed by Carl Maria von Weber in 1809 , to the work of Ferruccio Busoni, represented in 1917 and preceded by an orchestral suite (op. 41) performed for the first time in 1906.

More precisely, the libretto of Puccini’s work is based, very freely, on Andrea Maffei’s translation of Friedrich Schiller’s German adaptation of Gozzi’s work. The idea for the work came to the composer following a meeting with the librettists Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni, which took place in Milan in March 1920. In August of that year, when he was staying for a thermal stay in Bagni di Lucca, the composer could listen, thanks to his friend Baron Fassini, who had been for some time an Italian consul in China, a music box with musical themes from that country. Some of these themes are present in the final draft of the score.
Daniele Callegari, director of the representation says: "Turandot is a ritual, the whole second act is a ritual like the question of enigmas. There is always a smell of death. I do not seek success thanks to a very strong final but I look for more depth in the parts more hidden than the work and I would like the public to take this above all".

The crucial crux of the drama, which Puccini tried in vain to solve, is constituted by the transformation of Princess Turandot, icy and bloody, into a woman in love. According to Mosco Carner the musician, afflicted by a maternal complex, was incapable of conceiving love for other women except as a fault and on condition of degrading them: hence their "inferior" rank and their inevitable punishment for having loved. Therefore Turandot, who in love instead found redemption and happiness, could not correspond to the most intimate fibers of his inspiration, while Puccini’s true love would be Liù, devout to the point of being annulled. Turandot belongs more than any other Puccini’s work to the new century, not only for the unprecedented timbral fantasy and for the obvious references to Debussy and Stravinsky, but above all for the iterative quality of the metric-stylistic layout and the presence of exotic motifs that they give it a cruel, precious and impassive ceremonial step (MG Viggiani, 2019).

Viggiani, 2019).
