FRANKINCENSE and MYRRH

The Hektoen International Journal of Medical Humanities, published online by the University of Chicago, is a superb repository of articles at the nexus of art, music and medicine.

To Today, the Journal featured an article on frankincense and myrrh, among the most valuable materials in the ancient world and known through the biblical story of the Nativity. At that time, frankincense and myrrh were medicinal resins more valuable than gold.

In the article, we learn much about these resins:
“ Boswellia and Commiphora trees are scraggly and sharp . Growing close to the ground in the arid desert, they have short trunks and fanning branches, sometimes looking more like shrubs than trees. But despite their unlikely appearance, they once served as the cornerstone of an ancient trade. When cut , the bark of Boswellia trees, most often Boswellia serrata, produces a sticky resin to seal off the wound. This resin dries to form frankincense. Commiphora trees, most often Commiphora myrrha, produce myrrh through the same process.

The work of art that you see posted is a version of The Adoration of the Magi from the workshop of the great early Nederlandisch master, Gerard David (1480 - 1523).

“After establishing himself in Bruges, Gerard David joined the painter’s guild in Antwerp in 1515, where his compositions and motifs soon began to circulate. This superbly preserved panel is strongly indebted to David’s work.
“The extravagantly dressed onlookers are a pure invention of Antwerp art, as is the landscape view with travelers carrying goods for trade.
“Due to Antwerp’s status as the mercantile center for northern Europe, scenes of the Adoration of the Magi were particularly popular in the city. They served not only a devotional use, but could also be associated with the travel of foreign goods.”

From Matthew 2:11
“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, ... And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."
Matthew 2:1,11 (King James Version)
