President Barack Obama said late Thursday that he had authorised limited air strikes in Iraq to slow the advance of militant fighters of ISIS and confirmed that US Air Force cargo planes had begun humanitarian airdrops of food and other supplies in a bid to save the lives of religious minority Iraqis trapped on a mountain top.
“Today America is coming to help,” he declared in a late night statement from the White House. Earlier he had met with members of his national security team to discuss the growing threat to the Kurdish city of Erbil where a number of American personnel are based. Protecting American lives was the president’s first concern, sources said.
At the same meeting, President Obama also approved the start of the airdrops in response to a request from the Iraqi government. US planes have delivered food, water and medical supplies to some 40,000 Iraqis of the minority Yazidi religion who have fled into a mountainous area in north Iraq for fear of being slaughtered by the ISIS forces. US and European officials had earlier expressed concern that a human catastrophe could occur if no one intervened. The panicked exodus to the mountains began when ISIS jihadist fighters seized the town of Qaraqosh, Iraq’s biggest Christian town. Three US cargo aircraft flew to the area overnight escorted by American fighter jets. But Mr Obama was anxious to assure Americans that his decision did not mean a full re-engagement by the United States with Iraq. “As commander in chief, I will not allow the United States to be drawn into fighting another war in Iraq,” he said.
Any strikes will nonetheless mark the first time the US has taken a combat role in Iraq since 2011 when President Obama ordered all American troops out of the country. Since the start of the ISIS advance across parts of Iraq he has consistently said that air strikes were on the table as an option. Several hundred special forces advisors are meanwhile already in Iraq helping the Iraqi military and identifying possibly targets for strikes. By last night no actual strikes had been carried out. If they do come the main targets may in fact by ISIS forces at the base of the mountain where most of the trapped Yazidi are. They may also seek to blunt the advance of ISIS fighters towards Erbil, where some of the US advisors are stationed. ISIS, which also captured Iraq’s largest dam on Thursday, has declared its intention of creating a sovereign caliphates stretching across Iraqi and Syrian territory.
Reports earlier today that the US had already begun airstrikes in the Kurdish region of Iraq were denied by officials at the Pentagon who added that nothing “imminent” was planned. However, it appeared that air strikes by Iraqi fighter jets were perhaps already under way. The flight of so many Iraqi’s from the ISIS advance prompted a new statement of condemnation from the UN Security Council late Thursday. “The members of the Security Council call on the international community to support the government and people of Iraq and to do all it can to help alleviate the suffering of the population affected by the current conflict in Iraq,” said UK ambassador to the UN, Sir Mark Lyall Grant.
Crisi irachena: Obama autorizza attacchi aerei in Iraq
Giovedì scorso il presidente americano Barak Obama ha annunciato di aver autorizzato limitati attacchi aerei in Iraq per rallentare l’avanzata dei combattenti militanti di ISIS e ha confermato che gli aerei cargo della Air Force statunitense hanno iniziato con il lancio umanitario di cibo e altri rifornimenti nel tentativo di salvare la vita delle minorità religiose irachene intrappolate sulla cima di una montagna. “Oggi l’America è venuta per aiutare”, ha dichiarato in un comunicato a tarda notte dalla Casa Bianca. In precedenza aveva incontrato i membri della sua squadra di sicurezza nazionale per discutere la crescente minaccia per la città curda di Erbil, dove è stanziato un certo numero di personale americano. Proteggere le vite americane è la prima preoccupazione del Presidente, riferiscono le fonti. Durante la stessa riunione, il Presidente Obama ha anche approvato l’avvio dei lanci in risposta ad una richiesta del governo iracheno. Aerei americani hanno consegnato cibo, acqua e forniture mediche a circa 40.000 iracheni della minoranza religiosa Yazidi i quali sono fuggiti da in una zona montuosa nel nord dell’Iraq per paura di essere massacrati dalle forze ISIS. Stati Uniti e funzionari europei avevano espresso in precedenza il timore che una catastrofe umanitaria avrebbe potuto verificarsi se nessuno fosse intervenuto. L’esodo in preda al panico per le montagne è iniziato quando i combattenti jihadisti dell’ISIS hanno sequestrato la città di Qaraqosh, la più grande città cristiana in Iraq. Tre aerei cargo statunitensi hanno volato sulla zona durante la notte scortati dai caccia americani. Ma Obama era ansioso di rassicurare gli americani che la sua decisione non significa un completo re-impegno da parte degli Stati Uniti in Iraq. “Come comandante in capo, non permetterò che gli Stati Uniti siano coinvolti in un altro conflitto bellico in Iraq” ha detto. Possibili attacchi hanno segnato ad ogni modo l’unica occasione di impiego di forze armate da quando, nel 2011, il presidente Obama ha ordinato che tutte le truppe americane lasciassero il paese. Dall’inizio dell’avanzata di ISIS all’interno di territori dello stato iracheno, possibili attacchi aerei sono rimasti sul tavolo come opzione. Diverse centinaia di consiglieri appartenenti alle forze speciali sono nel frattempo già in Iraq per aiutare l’esercito iracheno ad identificare possibili bersagli degli attacchi. Dalla sera scorsa nessun attacco aereo è stato effettuato. Se dovessero attaccare i maggiori bersagli dell’ISIS, essi sono stazionati sotto la montagna proprio dove la maggior parte dei Yazidi è concentrata. Potrebbero anche pensare di arrestare l’avanzata dei combattenti dell’ISIS verso Erbil, dove è posizionata la maggior parte dei consiglieri statunitensi. L’ISIS che ha anche occupato la più grande diga irachena giovedì scorso, ha dichiarato la sua intenzione di creare un califfato che comprenda territori iracheni e siriani. Alcune fonti che riportavano un primo attacco delle forze americane nella regione curda dell’Iraq sono state smentite dagli ufficiali del Pentagono, secondo i quali niente è stato ancora pianificato. Comunque, secondo altre fonti attacchi aerei da caccia iracheni erano forse già in corso. L’attacco a molti iracheni, dovuto al’avanzata delle forze ISIS, ha provocato, giovedì scorso, una dichiarazione di condanna da parte del Consiglio di Sicurezza delle Nazioni Unite. “I membri del Consiglio di Sicurezza richiamano la comunità internazionale a sostenere il governo e il popolo iracheno di fare tutto il possibile affiché si allevino le sofferenze della popolazione colpita dal conflitto in Iraq”, ha dichiarato l’ambasciatore britannico alle Nazioni Unite, Sir Mark Lyall Grant.
